Welcoming Fall

Eight décor ideas for embracing the change of season

Shorter days and crisper air signal that time of year where “cozy” becomes the buzzword. And while bidding goodbye to summer is always hard, transforming your home into a snug space for fall goes a long way toward saying hello to chillier weather. Ready to start transitioning your living spaces? Consider these hassle-free decorating ideas to put you in a seasonal mood.

Warm Things Up

Look to the turning leaves for a classic fall palette. Earthy oranges, greens, creams, mustards and browns add richness and depth to a room. Easily incorporate these colors with throw pillows, blankets, vases, candlesticks and even kitchen towels. You might also introduce seasonal plaids or tweeds into the festive mix.

Swap Out Fabrics

Change out your bedding with flannel and replace lighter linen and cotton throws with heavier knits or the plushness of velvet.

Look to Layers

Nothing says “cozy” more than layering textiles. Add colorful throw rugs on top of neutral-colored area rugs or carpet. You can also up the snugness factor with extra pillows and blankets on sofas, chairs and beds.

Bring In a Touch of Mother Nature

Thoughtfully arranged gourds, pinecones, dried grasses, seedpods or blooms from your garden are all simple ways to add a fall vibe. Have a fireplace you won’t yet be using? Create a display in the interior with stacks of pumpkins—and then add dried grasses and gourds to the mantle.

Accessorize with Wood

Decorative wooden bowls (filled with the aforementioned pinecones and gourds) or woven accents, such as baskets, lend an organic, fall-inspired feel to any aesthetic.

Reconsider Lighting

Shorter days call for plenty of light in a room. Take stock of your living areas and bedrooms—they may benefit from additional table and floor lamps to make these spaces more inviting. Don’t forget about candles, too, as they’re great for adding a soft, ambient glow.

Change Out Lampshades

Speaking of lighting, refresh lamps by swapping out lighter-colored shades for ones with fall-colored hues.

Add a Mirror

Even if you already have a mirror in a hallway, entry, or living or room, a floor mirror (if space allows), will help reflect light, making the room feel brighter.
